Diagnostic Tools for Fuel Cell Technologies

revealing the state of health of fuel cells

Objectives

The assessment of a fuel cells the state of health as well as the prediction of failures requires the development of diagnostic methods during operation as well as after use.
Online diagnostic techniques under realistic fuel cell operation conditions are expensive, time consuming and difficult to interpret. Whereas post-mortem investigations only reveal details of the overall changes that have taken place during operation. It is therefore of high importance to develop an understanding of discriminating parameters in order to assess of the state of health in fuel cell technology and to translate the experimental results into scientific and technical understanding eventually leading to viable and reliable online and post mortem test methods for fuel cell technoloy.

The symposium aims at gatehring researchers and developers from the fuel cell arena and technical experts from measurement equipment manufacturers to:

  • discuss today’s available diagnostics tools for PEFCs and SOFCs,
  • share knowledge on state-of-the-art experimental methods and
  • identify requirements for further development of equipment and methods

The symposium will thus provide for enhanced insight into fuel cell degradation issues and how to counteract these to ensure longer and more reliable fuel cell lifetime.

Two particular topics will be focussed in this symposium:

  • PEFC online diagnostics
  • SOFC materials and microstructural issues
